I wished we would have had more of a discussion about our views on finances, raising children and life goals. These type issues have a way of being the source of disagreements and misunderstandings. Each comes to the marriage with different backgrounds and expectations of how a home should be.
This is less a piece of advice and more something I wish I had learned before marriage: That I would have understood and been content with who God created Me to be. I was shackled by the idea that as long as I tried really hard to be someone else that my husband would truly be happy! Fear controlled my life.
How I wished that I could go back as a free woman in Christ, because it did nothing but make us both miserable!
Stephanie, thank you for such sweet words of encouragement. i am sorry your ankle is hurting and will pray for you.
I deal with pain and chronic health issues all the time, but through it, God has made me a much more compassionate person than I use to be! These trials are never for nothing! God bless, dear sister!
To know that hard times will come...and to work through them together. To not have a black/white view on things...you must be able to see things in shades of grey.
There are so many things I wish I had known - but one of the big ones is to pay your school debt off as fast as you can, and stay out of debt except for your mortgage! It will allow you to start saving for your retirement early, and you will have all kinds of time for small monthly investments to grow into financial freedom!
I wish someone would have warned me about how difficult the first year of marriage can be... and that is normal... God works in & through your marriage through that tough first year.
Forgiveness, forgiveness, forgiveness... although, I was told about offering continued forgiveness to my husband but maybe it's just something easier said than done!
If your husband wants to make dinner, and it actually tastes good, do NOT complain about the way he cooks or the dishes he leaves behind. Just enjoy the dinner he made for you!
Seriously. We fought over how to make spaghetti for YEARS until I finally realized, "HELLO! He makes really good spaghetti! Just EAT IT!"

ReplyDeleteYou don't have to be perfect, or do everything perfectly. And you will learn together.

I was given this advice, but wish I took it more seriously...to make sure we make time alone every day.

To not let the little stuff turn into big stuff! Give and take is the key!
