How do you deal with people who are "time stealer"? Is there a polite way to cut them off and regain control?

  1. I don't know any and hope I am not one. There are times when people need you more than others.

  3. I think for a mom, just about anyone can be a time stealer. :) But, I just politely say something honest... I need to get going the baby is crying, etc.

  5. I've been pondering this since you posted the question. I still don't have an answer. I'm not sure there is a polite way...meaning a way not to hurt someone's feelings...to cut in and dismiss them. I'll keep thinking. Thanks for the great question! Happy Friday! :o)

  12. I have a friend who, when our oldest daughters were infants, would call and talk *to* me (not *with* me) for hours every day. I didn't know what to do. She was lonely and struggling from PPD, so I decided it was the least I could do to help her. We lived three hours apart, so I couldn't physically help her. But listening to her really got her through that first year of motherhood. She just needed time to find her maternal footing.

There were times when I didn't want to answer the phone, but the Good Lord helped me to understand that she needed me.

The phone calls eventually morphed into emails and that helped tremendously. I'm happy to say that 13 years later, we're still close friends!

  13. I like to make "talking" dates. IF the time-stealer is over the phone, I schedule a time where I have one full hour so I'm not clawing the countertops with my nails trying to get off of the phone. If it's in person, I'm upfront. "Hey, I have to go, but let's make a phone date to catch up." And I pray for grace. A lot of it.

  14. Funny, I just had this happen the other day. I was at my kids school and a mom was talking to me and her kids were running around everywhere! Mine were growing impatient, so I had to step in and say "I wish I could stay and talk more, but I need to get the kids some lunch. Let's plan to talk next time after we've dropped the kids off already." She said, "Oh that would be way easier wouldn't it?!"

We all know those kinds of people and have encounters with them, but sometimes just redirecting can help that other person realize something they didn't see while talking. Having kids can be one of the greatest "Polite ways" to cut someone off.
